Shuri: Skipping meals to make ends meet

Food prices have risen and what we eat has changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has affected us a lot, we are no longer having 3 meals a day, we are skipping lunch and we are no longer having snacks as well. My diet is less diverse. We are only able to buy needs not wants anymore because of this COVID-19. Money is becoming scary to get.

We cannot afford to buy meat anymore. The price of chicken and meat are rising now and again and we are forced to eat meat only twice a week. Fruits and vegetables have not changed much because they are still affordable. We cook at home more and can’t afford takeaways anymore.

I believe I am less healthy now because there are other things which are important in our diet, but we cannot afford to buy them. I did not start vegetable gardening at home because I do not have enough space for the garden. The answer to some of the food price increases would be to start a vegetable garden but the truth is I do not have a garden because the place I am staying is very small and there isn’t space for a vegetable garden.

In previous years we used to gather and celebrate public holidays like Labour Day with family, friends, and colleagues. We used to hire catering companies to make meals for us and everything was easier and affordable. This year, because of COVID-19 we are not going to have any gatherings and celebrations because we are not financially stable. Everything is a mess. We used to slaughter a cow and chickens and have refreshments on this special day, but now we cannot afford it.

Things are becoming more expensive each and every day and finding money is another problem, so life is becoming more impossible day by day.
